On the south coast of France, Marseille, is one of the largest and oldest city on France and the largest on the Mediterranean coast. Near the Old Port you can also see the lighthouse, Phare de Sainte Marie. On the quayside there is the church of Sainte Laurent and an adjacent chapel of Sainte Catherine. The church dates to the twelfth century and the chapel to the seventeenth century. There are many museums and galleries within the city for visitors to enjoy, with museums of modern art and fashion, a museum detailing Marseillaise citizen's day-to-day life in the city from the eighteenth century and a small maritime museum. The Musee d'Histoire details the ancient Greek and Roman history within the city through the remains of the Hellenic port and a preserved sixth century boat hull.
Outside the environs of the city center there is also plenty to see and do with beaches, open spaces such as the Pharo gardens, a botanical garden and the Parc Longchamp with impressive waterfalls and fountains. It is also home to the Longchamp Palace with the Natural History Museum and the Musee de Beaux Arts. Just outside the center is the Musee du Terroir Marseillaise, which is dedicated to the traditions and crafts of the Provencal region.

You may want to visit the local flea market with a wide range of knick-knacks to buy. The Quai des Belges in the Old Port is home to the city's daily fish market and fish plays a major role in many Marseillaise traditional specialties, such as the iconic fish soup bouillabaise.
